Wounded Warriors to Pedal Through Annapolis April 26
The Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride will arrive in Annapolis Saturday for an all day, 27-mile bicycle ride. The Warriors will be riding through much of the city.
This is part of a rehabilitative sports event for wounded American veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. For many of these combat-wounded veterans, this is a way to return to an active lifestyle.
The cyclists, many of whom have been severely wounded, want to give back. Even though they have already given so much, they want to give this positive message to the public and inspire the next group of wounded vets.
Many of these men and women have been physically active throughout their lives and are not prepared to lose that part of their lives.
The ride is not about politics or the war. It's about the soldiers.
Following, you will find a cue sheet that shows the entire route that will be traveled by the 25 wounded warriors. There will be an additional 50 support riders including medical staff, bike mechanics, family members, dignitaries and support vehicles.
In order to facilitate this ride and ensure the safety of all participants, the Annapolis Police Department will have five bike patrol officers and one motorcycle officer to handle traffic control. When the group comes to an intersection, traffic will be stopped in all directions, allowing the riders to get through the intersection en masse. Motorists will not be inconvenienced by these "rolling" intersection closings for more than 5 minutes at each location.
The Warriors ask that the citizens of Annapolis be patient and take the time to honor the sacrifice of these brave men and women.
In addition to your patience and support, the Wounded Warriors would love to see people come out and cheer on the riders as they pass by your community.
There will be a very brief celebration at the beginning of the ride. The riders will stop at the end of Susan C. Campbell Park at the newly-renovated City Dock at 10:30 a.m. A proclamation from Mayor Moyer will proclaim April 26 Wounded Warrior Day in Annapolis.
The public is encouraged to attend this event. Ask your friends and neighbors to show their support by waving flags and cheering for these valiant soldiers as they ride by.
